The price of foxtail millet, which is given daily to birds, has skyrocketed. Four months ago, its price was 45 rupees per kilo, and now it is over 90 rupees. Therefore, it is very difficult to raise birds. Could you please tell me how to provide other equivalent, less expensive grains as an alternative to foxtail millet?
Excellent nutritional value. It is a source of minerals, phosphorus, and calcium. Its high digestibility, along with a size and shape suitable for small birds, are the reasons it is the best feed for them.
Vitamins B1, B2, B3, and B6 are abundant in foxtail millet.
The energy from the foxtail millet diet helps breeders raising more birds.
The great popularity of egg food has also commonly increased it.
It is not just the price of foxtail millet, but also of other small grains that has gone up.

Instead of foxtail millet, other millets like bajra, barley, little millet, ragi, and job’s tears are usually given to birds.
- ✅ Along with the new limitations of foxtail millet, these can be given by mixing the old and new ones in small quantities.
- ✅ They can be softened with breads.
- ✅ Introduce any replacement grain gradually so birds do not suddenly reject the food.
When birds are fed at home, many disease conditions due to nutritional deficiencies are often seen. Special attention must be paid to avoid these deficiencies and imbalances.
⚠️ Due to what is available in the market, what is available at a low price, and what the birds are not interested in, deficiencies of other vitamins such as A, D, E, B12, biotin, pantothenic acid, niacin, biotin, chlorine, iodine, iron, copper, manganese, and selenium can also occur.
🌱 When giving seeds, they can be sprouted and given as a superfood for the birds.
🥕 After finely chopping spinach, coriander leaves, and carrots, they can be added along with grains to provide a good aroma and increase interest in the food.
🚨 The quantity of vegetables and leafy greens is important; for some bird species, especially canaries, they can be toxic.
