The couple who chose farming and farm tourism after leaving their jobs.
Vinodan, a native of Vadakara, Kozhikode, says he was interested in living without being a burden to anyone. He has an answer to the question of why he chose farming to invest his savings.
“First, if you enter farming with proper calculations, you can earn a great profit.
Second, I haven’t seen the happiness provided by farming and its harvest in anything else.”
This perspective on life is the foundation of his agricultural venture. He identified which crops to grow based on his own interests. His mind sought a place with fresh air, away from crowds and noise.
- After finishing his studies, Vinodan worked in the Gulf for 8 years.
- Later, he worked in Chennai for 20 years.
- He decided not to return to his hometown for his retired life.
- He wanted to start farming in a place with a good climate at the age of 50.
- He invested the money earned from his long career into farming.
- He purchased 5 acres of land near Poovaranthodu in Koodaranji Panchayat and started farming.
- 35% of the land is used for farm tourism, while the rest is for agriculture.
Vinodan says that farm tourism does not require much space.
- A variety of crops and products can be grown.
- Those who choose a farming life after leaving their jobs should do so based on their own circumstances.
- “Dream Acres,” his farm, is a result of his passion.
The farm includes livestock, aquaculture, and a mud house.
- Natural beauty of the area
- Natural pool
- Washroom facilities
- Farm stay experience
The farm produces coffee, black pepper, cardamom, and cloves, which visitors often purchase.
Fresh vegetables and milk produced on the farm are also used to prepare food for guests.
Vinodan notes that if rural farm tourism had developed by connecting these farm lands, many farmers would not have abandoned their land. Although authorities initially had reservations, they eventually approved the farm stay as it was safe and heartfelt without being luxurious. After five years, Vinodan’s farming life has reached a stable income. The couple is now building a mud house for visitors.
