The Animal Sciences University has released new breeds near Vadakara. The focus includes Thriveni, a hybrid chicken breed developed by the University’s Poultry Breeding Center in Ernakulam under the Veterinary University, and Chaitra, a hybrid duck breed developed for both meat and eggs.
These poultry breeds are closely connected to Kerala’s rural conditions, climate, egg demand and backyard farming needs, with long-term research, breeding work and conservation efforts behind them.
The Thriveni chicken is a hybrid chicken breed developed by the University’s Poultry Breeding Center in Ernakulam, which is under the Veterinary University. Nearly 40 years of research and experiments are behind it.
The Thriveni chicken was born by combining the qualities of three generations of chicken breeds, including the hybrid chicken Gramalakshmi, created by mating the native Thalassery chicken with the Rhode Island Red, and another chicken called Gramapriya.
- ✅ Its chicks can be seen in black color and in yellow color with black spots.
- ✅ Sales have been ongoing since 2014.
- ✅ The eggs weigh approximately 52 grams.
They can be used for both eggs and meat.
They can be raised free-range in a small space or in cages.
They have good immunity. Therefore, diseases are generally less common.
They also brood and hatch chicks like native chickens.
💡 These are chickens suited to our rural conditions and climate, making them practical for small backyard poultry farmers as well as cage-based rearing.

The Thalassery is a native chicken breed of Kerala. The hens are the mothers of this breed.
After the eggs of native breeds like Karinkozhi and Thalassery chicken received the national project approval in 2021, a center for the conservation of the Thalassery breed was started in Thiruvananthapuram.
The Mannuthy Kozhikode center was started to protect these chickens, which existed only in rural areas. Tens of thousands of eggs are sold from these centers every year. Eggs and chicks are available here.
They produce about 160-170 eggs. These chicks are given to those who need them.
| Breed or Point | Details from the article |
|---|---|
| Thalassery egg shell | The shell of our egg is light brown. |
| Yolk diameter | The yolk of the egg is 40-44 mm. It is less firm. |
| Normal breeder chicken yolk | The yolk of a normal chicken’s, or breeder chicken’s, egg will be 75-80 mm thick. |
| Fat and vitamin indication | The difference seen in the diameter of the yolk indicates that the fat content is low. When the yellow color of the yolk decreases, there may also be a deficiency of vitamins. |
| Rooster weight | Roosters will weigh around 1.3-1.5 kg in four months. |
| Other breeding notes | There are laying hens weighing up to 300 grams. The weight of the egg is very low. They can also be raised in cages. More chickens can be raised. |
