From Global Research to Local Fields

While conducting doctoral and post-doctoral research at Oxford (UK), Max Planck Institute (Germany), and Oregon University (USA), molecular biologist Dr. M. Chidambareswaran constantly asked himself: “How can my findings benefit the common farmers of my homeland?”

He has now found the answer through Claybiom Innovations, a biotechnology startup started in his hometown of Perinthalmanna, Malappuram. Partnering with him is his wife, Dr. Ketaki Mahajan, also a biotechnology researcher. Within a year of starting in March last year, they have developed their first product: Claybiom Biopellet.

Dr. M. Chidambareswaran, founder of Claybiom Innovations.
Claybiom Biopellet organic soil conditioner for farming.

What is Claybiom Biopellet?

Claybiom Biopellet is a unique soil additive and conditioner designed to revitalize soil health. Unlike traditional fertilizers that merely deposit microbes, these biopellets create an environment where beneficial microorganisms can actually grow and multiply.

Key Product Features:

  • Multi-purpose use: Acts as a soil conditioner, fertilizer, and planting medium simultaneously.
  • Smart Design: Specifically designed to stay submerged in water rather than floating.
  • Zero Acidity: Suitable for open fields, polyhouses, and terrace/grow-bag farming.
  • Scientific Backing: Supported by Startup India, Kerala Startup Mission, and MSME.

Three Variants for Diverse Needs

The startup is currently developing three types of biopellets:

1. Fully Organic

Made entirely of organic components

2. Semi-Organic

A blend of organic matter and specific fertilizers.

3. Crop-Specific

Tailored formulas for specific crops like Paddy, Tomato, Black Pepper, Coffee, and Coconut.

The Science of Soil Revitalization

The biopellets are composed of precise ratios of organic elements including:

  • Coconut shell powder
  • Crab shell powder
  • Cattle manure
  • Micro and macro nutrients

Science that descends into the soil” In India, soil health is changing drastically-carbon is decreasing, nutrients are leaching, and beneficial microbes are dying. While chemical fertilizers give quick results, they reduce the soil’s vitality long-term. Biopellets provide a scientific and simple solution.

Major Benefits for Farmers

  • Enhanced Carbon Sequestration: Significantly increases soil carbon levels, which may help farmers earn “Carbon Credits” in the future.
  • Microbiome Balance: Promotes beneficial bacteria and fungi (like Mycorrhiza) while suppressing harmful pathogens.
  • Root Health: Strengthens the root zone and improves nutrient absorption through activated carbon technology.
  • Immunity Boosting: Contains natural plant innate immune boosters that strengthen the plant’s natural defense against pests and diseases.

Future Outlook

Currently undergoing field trials for pepper, paddy, coffee, and vegetables, Claybiom Biopellets are expected to hit the market in phases by 2026. The couple also aims to develop bio-pesticides and adapt the technology for Hydroponics (soilless farming).
